Electioneering Charge Filed Against Selma Mayor

Published on April 25, 2025

The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office has filed a criminal charge against Scott William Robertson (57, of Selma) for the Prohibited Dissemination of Electioneering Information at a polling place.

It is alleged that on November 5th, 2024, while running for reelection as the Mayor of Selma, Scott Robertson approached voters who were waiting in line to cast ballots on election day. While holding a sign advocating for his reelection, Robertson spoke with some of the prospective voters about his campaign.

These actions are in violation of California Elections Code §18370(c), which states, “A person shall not, on election day, or at any time that a voter may be casting a ballot, do any of the following within the immediate vicinity of a voter in line to case a ballot or drop off a ballot:

(1) Solicit a vote;

(2) Speak to a voter about marking the voter’s ballot;

(3) Disseminate visible or audible electioneering information.

The Misdemeanor Complaint filed in the Superior Court alleges that Scott Robertson committed:

• One (1) Count of Prohibited Electioneering [Elections Code §18370(c)].

If convicted of the sole charge alleged, Scott Robertson faces a maximum of six months in jail.

“No one is above the law—especially those who hold public office. The integrity of our elections depends on everyone following the rules, and violations will be addressed,” said District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp. “Our office remains committed to ensuring a fair democratic process for all voters.”

Robertson was cited today, on April 25, in the City of Selma. The arraignment for Robertson is scheduled for Thursday, June 5th, at 8:30 am in Department 1 of the Fresno County Superior Court.
